HOUSTON, Texas – It doesn’t matter if it’s a brunch with friends, or you just want to find a new place to eat, I know how hard it can be deciding on a new spot to try. For my birthday I decided to search Pinterest for popular black owned restaurants in Houston. There were so many delicious options, but I settled on finally visiting Turkey Leg Hut.
Here’s how my birthday lunch in Houston went.

Turkey Leg Hut Review: What to Expect
My birthday happened to fall on a Tuesday so luckily it wasn’t very busy. I read a ton of reviews on Pinterest and Instagram about this restaurant, so I was totally prepared to wait in line for 3 hours. I decided to eat outside so I waited about 25 minutes. I got offered to sit inside quicker, but it was a beautiful day to soak up the sun.
There wasn’t any available street parking when I arrived mid afternoon. The only parking I saw close to the restaurant had $10 signs. I happened to be in my comfy Shoedazzle sandals and I had no issue parking further and getting my steps in.
They are clearly used to have to having a long wait because there are benches all around the outside of the restaurant for customers to sit and wait. The outside area is covered so you’re not melting in the Texas sun while you wait. Keep in mind Houston is a huge city and COVID-19 is still a thing. You must wear a mask while you’re waiting for your table.
Turkey Leg Hut Review: What to Eat
I have been dying to try this restaurant ever since I moved to Texas in 2017. I went over their COVID-19 version of their menu and just about everything sounded worth ordering. I started lunch with their Swamp Fries. Think barbecue pulled pork nachos but with slow roasted turkey, waffle fries, and just the right amount of cheese.
This appetizer was massive and everything my potato loving heart could dream of. I couldn’t finish it and still have room for my turkey leg, so I took it to go. I know everyone thinks warming up fries is an immediate no, but these were somehow just as delicious later after I used my air fryer to reheat them.
Taking a college math course is probably easier than deciding which turkey leg to try first. I was somewhere in between the Alfredo shrimp stuffed turkey leg and the Hennesy glazed turkey leg when I made my decision. I ordered the Ciroc mango habanero glazed turkey leg and I have zero regrets.
If you love spicy yet flavorful food just as much as I do then this is the option for you! The smoked turkey was quite literally falling off the bone. It was so tender and well seasoned I think I said “damn” out loud. It is very spicy and not for someone with sensitive tastebuds.
Turkey Leg Hut Review: What to Drink
Now as I mentioned earlier in this post, it was my birthday lunch. So, unfortunately I was a little too turnt to get any photos of the drinks. I promise you next time I go I will take ton of cute cocktail photos and post them on my Instagram. However, if you’re visiting Turkey Leg Hut I recommend you trying their H-Town Rising and Taffy Tini.
Turkey Leg Hut Review: Final Thoughts
Before I even made it home that evening I was already planning what I would order on my next Turkey Leg Hut visit. I didn’t take photos, but after I left the restaurant I decided to go across the street to their food truck. I ordered the lobster mac and cheese, and just wow. It was so creamy, perfectly seasoned, and filling. Everyone from the beautiful host who told me I remind her of Solange to our super helpful waiter; the customer service at Turkey Leg Hut was great. For two people we spent less than $60 on an amazing lunch. The music was even great the entire afternoon.
I can’t wait for my next trip to the Turkey Leg Hut. If you’ve been before leave me a comment of your favorite menu items.
